Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women/People

The average missing persons rate for Idaho Indigenous persons (18.99 per 100,000 persons) is almost double the rate for the state. Between 2016 and 2020 the annual number of Indigenous missing persons entries ranged between 72 and 93. Idaho’s Indigenous persons are disproportionately represented in deaths attributable to assault at about three times their proportion in the population.

On March 18, 2020, Indigenous Idaho Alliance was key in the passage of HCR033 Missing Indigenous Persons, a concurrent resolution out of the Idaho Legislature recognizing the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People in Idaho. Our advocacy effort included a summit of state and federal level stakeholders, tribal leadership, and tribal advocates, as well as drafting the legislation, campaigning for its passage, and report backs.

However, this was just the first step. IIA is in the process of creating a coordinated MMIP Response Team that can be deployed within 24 hours of a request. This is aside from any official response and is tailored for Indigenous people first and foremost. The group is designed on traditional values and matriarchal action that would include, but is not limited to:

  • Mental Health Counselors

  • Basic Necessities

  • Interagency Coordination
